2024 DESIGN TRENDS: THE INS AND OUTS

Hello Humans!

I know January is usually the longest month but to be honest, this one has exceptionally gone by so fast!!! I'm not complaining though—busy is good, and 2024 is looking promising thus far. I officially kick-start my year in February, using January to put things into perspective and as I mapped out my plans and projects, I found myself pondering over interior styling trends—those to embrace and those to bid farewell.

Now, I must confess, I'm not one to be swept away by every passing trend. I'm more of a timeless babe, sticking to what I know and love. But, and it's a big but, I do enjoy keeping an eye on the trends, drawing inspiration from the ones that speak to my soul.

Here’s my two cents on the trends that could use a graceful exit and those I wholeheartedly believe we should embrace or continue embracing this year. I have drawn insights from what I’ve heard and seen the experts lean towards as well as my intuition.

The disclaimer: Read on, but do so lightly. This is my first time sharing my opinion on trends. Think of it as a chat between friends rather than a solemn decree. I'm not crafting an Interior Styling Bible here-although, who knows, maybe one day?! #winkwink

Out with the Old

  1. Excessive Shiny Gold: Bidding goodbye to the overuse of shiny gold-plated decor wouldn’t be such a bad idea. An overuse of these pieces makes a space look tacky and overwhelming. While metallic accents remain popular, I expect a shift towards muted and matte finishes. Think mixing metals and subtler tones for a more refined touch.

  2. Generic Mass-Produced Decor: The era of generic, mass-produced decor might be declining. Let’s say hello to unique, handcrafted pieces that showcase individuality and craftsmanship. Let’s just pay our respects to sustainability and conscious consumerism. This year I see more people leaning towards artisanal pieces and getting excited to attend pop-up markets so they can grab bespoke decor pieces.

  3. Matchy Matchy Furniture: Overly coordinated furniture won’t be cute anymore. We don't want spaces that look like a showroom or a furniture store. Instead, let’s embrace the wave of personalized designs with a mix of textures and accessories. Mix the old and new making different furniture pieces conversation starters. Your space, your style!

  4. Box Coffee Table Books: It's time for a change. I’m going to make some enemies here but it’s time to swap out those boxy coffee table books for real interior design gems. I don’t get why someone would style a coffee/side table with a box that’s supposed to look like a book but doesn’t look like the book it’s supposed to look like? #makeitmakesense.

There are plenty of oversized books out there that add depth and character to your space. Comment below if you’d like a list of some of my recommended Interior Design books that are used for styling shelves and tables.

In with the New

  1. Natural Elements and Sustainable Materials: The trend of incorporating natural elements and sustainable materials continues to reign supreme. Think reclaimed wood, natural stone, and eco-friendly fabrics for a space that promotes well-being and environmental awareness.

  2. Multifunctional Furniture: With the way the economy is going, I would be happy to see practicality take center stage with the rise of multifunctional furniture. Let’s embrace pieces that serve various purposes and can be easily reconfigured.

  3. Biophilic Design and Greenery: Get ready to bring the outdoors in! Biophilic design, which integrates nature into indoor spaces, is gaining popularity. Think indoor plants, nature-inspired artwork, and elements like natural light and water features for a fresh and vibrant ambiance. This design is one of my favorites, I honestly can’t wait to style my dream dining room with a water feature!

  4. Global and Cultural Influences: Day by day, social media and travel are turning the world into a global village. Diversity is key! Design styles influenced by various cultures and global aesthetics are on the rise. I see an incorporation of textiles, patterns, and traditional craftsmanship from around the world to add richness to spaces.
